What's a MIDI, a music file?
What is SCP-055 again? I forgot.

Why 'midi_instrument_salamander' sounds folder so bloated? 641 items, totalling 82.4 MB?

Because Salamander Grand Piano is very large soundfont.
It has many kinds of sounds (e.g. hammer noise), so the folder has been bloated.

This is quite cool! Are the MIDI files loaded on demand during runtime? If so I can imagine a primitive music streaming service fetching music via HTTP. Though it’d perhaps be somewhat pointless because with MIDI it’s not the music files themselves that demands bandwidth.

Cooler still would be support for mod file playback, since mods allow more elaborate and expressive music compositions than MIDI:

https://modarchive.org/

There's a well established community of listeners and composers dating back 30+ years, so definitely no shortage of free content.
