by LonelyCDDISK » Post

hello folks of minetest!
I was just wondering, what ways are there to increase fps on a shitty laptop/asus n53sv?

thanks in advance!

Greetings and welcome to the Minetest forums.

https://github.com/minetest/minetest/is ... -625286246

With all these points applied, I can squeeze out additional 4 FPS (previously 8 FPS) from a 2007 Asus laptop with basically non-existent GPU support and CPU that runs hot very quickly even with new thermal paste applied.
Look, I programmed a bug for you. >> Mod Search Engine << - Mods by Krock - DuckDuckGo mod search bang: !mtmod <keyword here>

If you are playing single player a discord user found that running a server locally and connecting to it on the same computer gives a CPU based performance increase. Possibly due to better parallelization.

See if you can give the iGPU more shared memory in the BIOS and use the LowSpecGamers older guide to optimizing windows if you are not running Linux.

Client-Hardware
* more ram

Client-Software
* system up to date
* special graphic driver
* reduce resolution
* less apps running in background (best fresh booted unit)

Client itself - settings
all check boxes off
* smooth lighting
* no particles
* 3d clouds
* opaque water
* simple leaves
* No filter
* No mipmap
* anti-aliasing None
* Shaders checkbox empty = no
* play full Screen (mostly better then windwed)
* - Graphics, - In-Game, - Advanced : Screen width / height (automatic remember, but could set here also)
maybe
(removed)

* avoid high-res textures. Go with default or what the server provides. (thx Sokomine)

Client - inGame
* reduce view (press -)
* the position your working, build trees/ore a sight-wall around, make automatic GPU have NOT to generate far distance view = less work
* restarting minetest app also refresh the fps a lot

That laptop seems to come with an extra graphics card, although it's pretty old?

General suggestions:
* make sure not to be on far view (press the Range select key to toggle between it and normal view)
* choose opaque leaves
* no filter, no mipmap, no antialiasing
* perhaps no particles, no 3d clouds, no smooth lighting
* avoid high-res textures. Go with default or what the server provides.
* play on servers (saves the ressources of running the server yourself)
* avoid servers with technic and pipeworks installed

Hope that helps a bit.

Saving map form the server greatly increases disk usage and is useless for low end devices.

That's right, it causes some usage, and a hard drive may lead to stutter in gameplay when data is saved. SSDs help a lot in that regard. In general: Activate map saving only sometimes - when you've built enough that it's worth keeping.

Therefore irrelevant to increasing performance

edit:

as that refereed link (sorcerykid.github.io/minetestforums/pages/10_22561) was deleted now,

I took all of this old but still working and proofed options together at

tuning.minetest.one

even they are some also not for this case here (as a laptop)

might be nice, to get response from the Thread starter about if something worked

i feel bad that i forgot about this thread, lowering the resolution from 1080p to 720p, helps (even if it's by a tiny bit), lowering the view distance/range also helps alot, i keep mine at 150
