New to Minetest - need sound and etc

by Garakson » Sat Oct 20, 2012 12:58

After being frustrated with the low fps in Minecraft, I found out about Minetest. This game runs beautifully on my older system. Yes! I'm running the latest version with the converted Sortex Flanver texture pack. My only problem is there doesn't seem to be any sound. I understand there is a mod solution. What mod should I get? I'm also interested in knowing of mods for animals, farming and others to make this game, more enjoyable.

Thanks. The version of Minetest I have is 0.43 for Windows 7. (32).

So, where is OpenAL, or is it OpenAI?

Here's a post where you can find it (no direct link)

First, it's 0.4.3, not 0.43. :P

Here you can download OpenAL for Windows:
http://connect.creativelabs.com/openal/Downloads/oalinst.zip

Extract this then run the .exe installer inside.

Thanks. I already found it. It's good that you put it on this thread, though. It'll make it easier for other newbies to find it.

I've also downloaded the animal modpack that Adam mentioned in his list of mod. I've also grabbed Calinou's modpack. :) I've not sean any animals, yet.

I was a little surprised at the lack of diversity in trees. There only seem to be standard oak and jungle. I'm sure more will come. Right now, I'm wanting to compare how long it takes me to build a nice house in Minetest; as opposed to Minecraft.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the list, Topywo.

I looked at the "Birch & Pine" and it seems to be on hold. Too bad, this was something I was interested in. My main reason for the birch and pine is the different color wood planks. I was surprised the existing jungle tree didn't have its own plank and etc. Yes, I'm also interested in seeing a more scenic look.

VanessaE made different colored planks :-) http://bit.ly/Of22GV

You need to use /giveme to get them or find (a) mod(s) that gives you the possibilties to make dye to color the planks.

Like the combination flowers and unified dyes from VanessaE: http://bit.ly/NSfqjw http://bit.ly/PETfyU or
Cornernote's dyecraft: http://minetest.net/forum/viewtopic.php?id=3267 or
a mod like technic, which has it's own way to make dye http://minetest.net/forum/viewtopic.php?id=2538

Yeah, minetest does run better than minecraft. But if you say that you have an older system, you might want to hold off on the animals mod, as it takes lots of computing power to be able to run it, so I would stick with PilzAdam's simple mobs mod.
I love exploring minetest worlds :D
If you have a good seed let me know

I was looking at the various screenshot and some videos. Where did shots with birch trees come from? What mod?

hello,
i wont go on with that, cause everytime i start something, i noticed that somebody has done it too and even better then me. so i said that everybody is free to use my code and the graphics i used.

so if you like the birch @pine feel free to use and change the code to a way you like or need.

Greetings and welcome to the forums!

Yes, I'm also interested in seeing a more scenic look.

I agree, Minetest could use some sprucing-up in the scenery department (snow-topped mountians, boulders - large and small piles of the stone nodes - in mountain areas, natural waterfalls, canyons, more tree and plant varietals, luminous ores in water caves that can be crafted with regular nodes to produce a slight glow-in-the-dark version of the regular node - glow-plants, glow-trees, glow-dirt-with-grass to make a night path...) Ok, that's stuff for the "Feature Request" forum.

"Many hands make for light work." - the more folks we have working on the code (new or improvements on existing) makes Minetest better in the long-run.

With mods like 4seasons (winter and autumn are especially nice), animals (mobf), bushes+flowers+junglegrass+nature+vines (can be used individually or found in nature_pack_controlled), farming/farming_plus and hydro, nature looks quite good already. All those mods combined slower down map generation; but once it's generated it is usually fast enough. Maybe it would be easiest to use farming_plus to add more trees? Pears, plumes, cherries, nut trees and so on might be a good addition.
A list of my mods can be found here.
